Virginia Mullins Baker, 88, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and faithful servant of the Lord, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 11:50 a.m. She passed peacefully, surrounded by the children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, and caregivers who loved her dearly.
Virginia was born to Hansford Mullins and Decima Roberts Mullins. After the passing of her mother at an early age, her father married Edith Blevins, who raised Virginia and her siblings. Virginia was a member of the first graduating class of J.J. Kelly High School. After graduation, she had the privilege of working for Mr. Kelly himself. She went on to dedicate more than 40 years of her life to Wise County Schools, where she served as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1999. Even after retirement, Virginia continued working. In 2009, she returned to the workforce as office manager for Dr. Freda Helbert at Mountain Empire Hearing and Balance. She retired again in 2019 at the age of 81.
She and her late husband, Frank, formed The Baker Trio and sang for nearly 30 years. Later their children, Judy and Greg along with their new son-in-law, Winfred Collins sang with them and became The Baker Family, traveling and ministering in churches for over 20 years.
Virginia was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Frank Baker; her parents, Decima Mullins and Hansford Mullins; her stepmother, Edith Mullins; brothers, Jerry Mullins and Dennis Mullins; sister, Mary Hamm; and niece, Candace Rakes.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Greg Baker and wife Lesa; daughter, Judy Collins and husband Winfred; and her grandchildren, who were a tremendous source of pride and joy to her: Alyssa Phillips and husband Ryan, Kara Spurlock and husband Joshua, Maddie Collins, Decima Holbrook and husband Blake, and Nathaniel Baker and wife Morgan. She also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her heart. She is also survived by her sisters, Teresa Wendle and husband Bill, Jennifer Hibbitts and husband Paul, and Annette “Sissy” Underwood; brothers, Randy Mullins and wife Brenda, Mike Mullins and wife Jeannie, all of Wise, Virginia, and Paul Phipps and wife Mae of Sanford, Florida; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Virginia, lovingly known as “Jenny,” was a woman who devoted her life to her family and her faith. She was not one to spend her life pursuing hobbies, because she was always a working mother, faithfully providing for and caring for those she loved. Her greatest joy was her family. She was incredibly proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and treasured every moment she could spend with them.
Above all, Virginia loved the Lord. Her faith was not simply something she spoke about—it was something she lived. Her love for Jesus, her dedication to her family, and her example of loving and serving others have created a legacy that will continue through the generations that follow her.
As Virginia’s health declined, she was blessed with caregivers who provided her with exceptional love, kindness, and compassion. Her family is forever grateful for each person who cared for her and for the love they showed their mother during her final days. There could be no more fitting farewell than the one God allowed her to have. Virginia took her final breath surrounded by her children, grandchildren, siblings, and caregivers—those who had walked beside her through life and loved her until the very end. She finished her race. She kept her faith. And now she is home. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and is now in the presence of the Lord she loved and faithfully served. Until we meet again, Mom, Jenny, Mamaw, and friend. Your love, your faith, and your legacy will live on in all of us.
