Shirley Frances Meade Bates, 83, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023, in the Norton Community Hospital Norton, Virginia. She was born and raised in Castlewood, and made her home in Coeburn, Virginia. She loved sewing, canning, and gardening especially flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald T. Bates.

Surviving is her three children, Loretta Sue (Joey) Robinson, Trula Faye (Vernon) Lane, and Doris Ann (Bob) Mays; 7 grandchildren, Cheryl (Jason) Hubbard who was like fourth daughter and caregiver till the end; Scott (Amanda) Sanders, Polly (Ron) Young, Josh (Lori) Lane, Patrick (Eliza) Deel, Kayla Deel, Katlyn Deel; 8 great grandchildren,  The family would like to thank Norton Rescue and the doctors and nurses at Norton Community Hospital for the care given.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 12, 2023, 1 P.M. to 2 P.M. at the Sturgill Funeral Home 310 6 ^th Street NW Coeburn, VA. Funeral service will follow in the chapel with Pastor Greg Bowman and Pastor Clayton Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Acres Cemetery Coeburn, Virginia.
