Obituary

WISE, VA                                           FEBRUARY 9, 2026

Ruth Ely Gilliam, 78, a dedicated educator and pillar of the Southwest Virginia community passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

She was born to the late Hargis and Thelma Wampler Ely. Ruth lived a life defined by service, scholarship, and a deep love for her heritage.

Ruth was a proud graduate and valedictorian of Dryden High School and continued her academic journey at Clinch Valley College and VPI (Virginia Tech). Her passion for education led her to earn a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) from VPI, a testament to her lifelong commitment to excellence.

As a beloved educator in both Wise and Lee County, Ruth didn't just teach, she mentored generations of students, instilling in them the same curiosity and drive she possessed. Her legacy of service to the community and her students will never be forgotten. Her influence extended beyond the classroom through her work on the Library Board, and the Mountain Empire Foundation Board.

A proud Daughter of the American Revolution, Ruth served as a Past Regent of the Lovelady DAR. She was deeply involved in local civic life, holding memberships in the Lee County Women's Club and the Wise County Fortnightly Club. Whether she was preserving local history or supporting community development, Ruth moved through the world with purpose and grace.

Behind her many accolades was a woman of deep devotion.

A faithful and devoted member attending St. Charles Baptist Church, Ruth found great joy in her church family. She was a constant presence in the pews, driven by a deep love for her Lord and a desire to serve others. Her spiritual journey was enriched by the guidance of Pastor Paul Davis, Jr. whose friendship and wisdom provided her with immense strength through her time at St. Charles Baptist.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Howard "Spanky" Gilliam, who was the light of her life. She also leaves behind a close-knit family who will all miss her dearly; brother, Ron Ely and wife Barbara; sisters, Reeta Fletcher, Rollie Shaw and Regina Gullion; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ruth will be remembered as a woman of sharp intellect and a kind heart, a true daughter of Virginia who gave back to the mountains that raised her.

Ruth's wishes for cremation will be honored. She will be interred at Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA during a private family ceremony. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ruth's honor to St. Charles Baptist Church, 188 Big Branch Road, St. Charles, VA 24282.
