Obituary

Paul J. Ramey, a longtime resident of Coeburn, VA, and Vietnam Veteran, passed away on January 14th, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara E. Ramey, his father, Paul C. Ramey, and his mother, Margie E. McCrum. He is survived by his son, Terry Ramey, his daughter, Dawn M. Robinette, and her husband Kenneth Robinette. His three brothers, and Mrs. Larry McCrum, Mr. and Mrs. Steve McCrum, and Mr. and Mrs. Randy McCrum. Grandchildren, Kelsie and her husband Caleb Riner, Kristen and her husband Aaron Price, and Katelyn Hall and her fiancé Brady Adams, Cody Collins, and by his great-grandson (his "little buddy") Lane Walker Riner.

Paul was a U.S. Army Paratrooper assigned to 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. He was deployed to Vietnam for a combat tour in 1968, where he served as a Rifleman. He fought bravely and selflessly until he was injured in combat, where he unfortunately returned home as a double amputee. He was a decorated and respected soldier, whose list of awards are the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Parachutist Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Expert Rifleman's Badge.

He was a faithful member of Mary's Chapel Church and loved his church family dearly. He was an active member of the local VFW 8652 and strong supporter of Veterans' causes. He a member of the Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 A.F. & A.M. and was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. He was known for his practical jokes (especially towards the ladies in his Sunday school group).

He will be remembered as a patriotic and selfless individual, who gave of himself and was always humble and kind.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 19, 2023, 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Sturgill Funeral Home 310 6 th Street NW Coeburn, VA. Memorial Service will be conducted at 7 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Marty Puckett officiating. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted 11 A.M. Friday, January 20, 2023, at the Greenwood Acres Cemetery Coeburn, VA. with the VFW and Virginia National, Guard Honor Teams conducting service.
