WISE, VA                                                                   SEPTEMBER 16, 2026

John Robert DuVal, IV passed away peacefully, following a brief illness, at his home in Wise, VA on Monday, September 14, 2026. Paula, his wife of 45 years, was by his side.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Todd and Jackie Lee (O’Dell) DuVal; his daughter, Pollie Jo DuVal; his father-and mother-in-law, Billy Joe and Coleen (Elkins) Bevins; niece, Renee DuVal and Baby Aspen; and grandmother-in-law, “Momma Ida” Bevins.

John was born in Williamsburg, VA. He graduated from Coeburn High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. John served with the 6903rd Security Squadron in Korea as a Chinese linguist during the Vietnam Conflict. At the end of his service period, John enrolled at Clinch Valley College with the assistance of the G.I. bill. He earned a B.A. in History and met his future wife, Paula, while attending classes. The two were married on July 17, 1981.

After graduating from CVC, John began working at Auto World in Big Stone Gap, VA where he worked as a sales manager and supervised finance and insurance for 30 years.

John loved his 3 girls-Paula, Whitney, and Pollie-until John Logan was born and he became John’s favorite. John and his family enjoyed traveling, Atlanta Braves baseball, and UVA Cavalier basketball.

John is survived by the love of his life, Paula; daughter, Whitney DuVal; the joy-of-his-life grandson, John Logan DuVal; brother, Scott DuVal (Lisa); sister, Cathy DuVal; brother, David DuVal (Carolyn); sisters-in-law, Jewell Worley (Wayne), Rhonda Greear, Nancy Wheatley (Wayne), Melissa Bevins, and Suzy Mullins (Steve). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral service for John Robert DuVal IV will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 17, 2026 at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, VA with Rev. Mike Porter officiating. Graveside committal services and burial with Military Rites will follow in the Greenwood Acres Cemetery in Coeburn, VA. Family will receive friends from 12:30 P.M. till time of services at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 16, 2026 at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, VA.
