Joan Carol Roberson Hall left this world peacefully on October 27, 2025. She fell asleep and woke up in glory. Mama Joan, as she was named by her grandchildren, lived a full and blessed life. A wife, mother, stepmother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, the matriarch of the Hall family. She spent most of her life in service to her church and community. A teacher, successful business owner, one of the founding members of the Coeburn Civic League, Sunday School Teacher, Lay Speaker for many areas Methodist churches, and a servant for The Lord. Her biggest joy in life was her love of God, family, and friends. Born in Wise, Virginia. Friendships that began during her earliest years have lasted a lifetime. Not a week passed without reminiscent conversations about their years as majorettes for the J J Kelly Band. In 1959, Joan became one of the earliest students to attend the newly formed two-year Clinch Valley College. After graduating from East Tennessee State in 1964, Joan began her teaching career at Coeburn High School where she met her future husband, Coach John Hall. The two eloped on March 2, 1967, and spent their honeymoon refereeing a ballgame! They would spend the next forty-four years together. One of the most commendable moments of Joan's life is when she chose to marry John Hall, she also chose to become a mother to his three children Dlana, Gina, and John Jr. In 1969, John and Joan had their son Garland Andrew Hall. The family continued to grow throughout the years. Dlana married Samuel Bodmer in 1981. They have two sons, Daniel Jonathan Bodmer and William Edward Bodmer. Garland married Missy Salyer in 1993. They have three daughters, Kaitlyn, Jillian, and Braelyn Hall. John Jr. has one son, John R. Hall III, and his fiancé Pam Cline. Joan "Carol" cherished her nieces Tammy Belcher Tiller (Rod) and Lana Sakash (George) and Lee Anna Mullins (Gary). Joan touched the lives of many Coeburn High students throughout her teaching career, as well as patrons of her business The Diamond Boutique which she co-owned with her sister Phyllis. The two helped many brides and excited high school prom girls throughout two decades. Joan loved dancing, traveling, and gardening with her husband, spending time with her grandchildren, and in recent years, her great-grandchildren. Holidays were always full of joy creating lasting memories for her family. She loved preparing amazing meals and holiday festivities. As soon as her grandchildren crossed the threshold of her home, they would ask Mama Joan— "Did you make cornbread?" "Is the stack cake ready to eat yet?" And her infamous Gingerbread cookies not only a delight to her grandchildren, but also to every child who ever graced the porch of the Hall family home. In May, her joy expounded when all five great-grandchildren came together—Elliott and Ezra Bodmer (Maryland), and Rye, Bear, and Arch Bodmer (Colorado). and she got to share her special cookies with the new generation. Joan Carol Roberson Hall was preceded in death by her beloved husband John R. Hall. her beautiful stepdaughter Gina Renee Hall, her parents, Garland and Ruby Roberson, her sister Phyllis Roberson Belcher, and her brother-in-law, Harold Belcher.

Family will receive friends Thursday, October 30, 2025, 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Sturgill Funeral Home 310 6th Street NW Coeburn. Funeral Service will follow in the chapel. Burial will be in the Greenwood Acres Cemetery Coeburn, Virginia.
