James Vernon
Peters
d. Feb 23, 2025
NORTON, VA. FEBRUARY 25, 2025
James Vernon Peters made his way home to be with his Heavenly Father on February 23, 2025.
Jim was born to the late Wyatt Hamilton Peters and Dovie Mae Cowden Peters. He was the 9th born of their 12 children.
Jim spent the majority of his life in Southwest Virginia. He married the late Anna Mae Phillips Peters in 1961 and together they had three children. Two daughters, Denise Steele of Wise, VA, Jennifer (Danny) French of Kingsport, TN, and one son, Brian (Vicki) Peters of Wise, VA. Their legacy continued as the family grew, giving them two granddaughters, Brittany Tunnell of Church Hill, TN, and Leanna Steele of Urbana, Maryland, and three grandsons, Alexander Peters of Kingsport, TN, Matthew Peters of Wise, VA, and Andrew Peters of Wise, VA. They were blessed with one great granddaughter, Addison Lewis of Kingsport, TN.
Jim was of the Baptist faith. Early adulthood found him serving in the Company B 249th Engineer Battalion for the US Army. There he studied Surface Machine Operation and carried what he learned home to later work in the coal mines and as an electrician. Jim was the co-owner of A&J Market in Norton, VA. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing with many of his family and friends. After he retired, you could find him enjoying the great outdoors outside at his home working on his land or equipment. What Jim enjoyed the most though was cheering on his grandchildren at the ballfield. He was their biggest fan.
We would like to take the time to say thank you to all of the people that supported and cared for Jim. The caregivers at MEOC and all of the people that provided him with physical and occupational therapy were amazing. We want to say a special thank you to all of his medical providers and the Hospice team at Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
The family will have a private memorial service where Jim will be laid to rest at the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Please visit www.sturgillfuneral.com to leave online condolnces for the family.
Sturgill Funeral Home 1621 Norton Road SW Wise, VA 24293 is in charge of arrangements.
