Coeburn, Virginia                                                         October 6, 2022

Fred Lee Wallen, age 84, of Coeburn, Virginia, passed away on September 30, 2022, after a
lingering illness. He was the son of the late Daisy B. and Rufus L. Wallen of Rt. 2, Coeburn, Virginia.

Fred graduated from Clintwood High School in 1957. He spent 10 years in the United States
Marine Corp and he was a Vietnam veteran. He was promoted to the rank: of Staff Sergeant and
became a United States security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan.

Upon leaving the military, he attended Wise County Technical School, and he was certified as a
sheet medalist. He lived and worked in San Diego, California, until he retired. After retirement,
he and his wife, Sue, made their home in Coeburn, Virginia. They enjoyed traveling and fishing
as well as spending time with family and friends. Fred always had a tale to spin or a joke to tell.

Fred Wallen was preceded in death byan infant daughter, Mayo Lee Wallen, his parents, Rufus and Daisy Wallen and a sister, Shirley
McElrath Spinella.

Fred Wallen is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, of 27 years, one son, Shawn Clinton
Wallen of the state of Washington, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three
sisters, Loretta Switzer and John of Lutz, Florida, Judy H. Stuart, and Malcolm of Richlands,
Virginia, Henrietta Lafferty, and Bill of Belleair Shore, Florida, and one brother, Paul Wallen of
Coeburn, Virginia. There are nine nieces and eight nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Mullins Cemetery on Caney Ridge (Dickenson
