Frances Harris Riggs passed away peacefully at the age of 103 on August 11, 2025.

Frances graduated from Dungannon High School as valedictorian and went on to graduate from Milligan College. She was a teacher in the Wise County School System, with many of her years being spent at Wise Primary School teaching children to read. After retirement, she continued to help with the annual Spring Variety Show and reading with the students on special occasions.

Frances was also a longtime member of the Eastern Star, Fort Nightly, and the Trinity United Methodist Church of Wise.

On Friday nights, she could be found rooting on her husband, Jim "Big Daddy" Riggs, and the Appalachia Bulldogs. She loved cooking for her family, preparing many a birthday and holiday feast. Many fond memories were made at Granny Fran and Pa's house.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Silvia Dean Harris, her loving husband of 70 years, James "Jim" Riggs, her beloved sister Jeanne Edwards, her son James "Jimmie" Riggs, daughters Lynda Poston and Janice Riggs, and her granddaughter Cindy Collier.

Surviving are her six grandchildren, Janis Tester, Jamey Riggs, Dana Fleming, Jason Riggs, Rebecca Williams, and Jody Riggs, her brother Larry Harris, sisters Joyce Harris Gross and Peggy Harris Sutphin, son-in-law Pedie Poston, thirteen great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be conducted 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Skeen Cemetery Powell Valley Road Big Stone Gap, Virginia with Pastor Phillip Bates officiating.
