Charles "Charlie" R. Culbertson, 59, passed away peacefully from this life the morning of Friday, March 31, 2023 at his home in Norton.

He was born at St. Mary's Hospital to Coy and Blanche Scott Culbertson and was brought home in a big snowstorm. Charlie was blessed with a big, loving family. He enjoyed going to work. He worked in the coal and timber industry most of his life and drove trucks and heavy equipment. His first truck had a smurf on the cab shield and earned him that nickname. Most, if not all, of his coworkers referred to him as "Smurf" since that day. He was a member of the Suthers Masonic Lodge #259 AF&AM of Norton and The Wise County Shrine Club. Charlie loved to live life and laugh. He loved watching John Wayne. His favorite show was Andy Griffith and he enjoyed playing the trivia game with the family on Friday nights when they got together to keep their dad company since the loss of their mom. (sometimes Greta would let him win). He never met a stranger and was a known prankster. One time he tied his dad's shoes together while he was napping and then startled him to wake him…the rest is history…you have to know Coy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Blanche.

Surviving are his father, Coy; wife, Lea; children, "Little" Charlie (Jessica), Daphanie (Andrew), Cody (Peyton) and Tabby (Mark); beloved grandchildren, Branden, Patrick, Allie, Aaron and Finley; three granddogs, Jack, Tucker and Chester; sisters, Donna (Charlie), Joyce (Mark), Greta (Sput) and Mary (Jeff); brother, Bub (Connie); nieces, Whitney (Josh), Misty (Brad), Meagen (Jason), McKenzie, Mikala, Jennie (Jeremy) and Jessica; nephews, Mark (Rhonda), Jarrad, Coby (Gretchen), Josh and Bucky (Lora) and many more who will gather together to laugh and cry and celebrate his life.

Masonic services for Charlie Culbertson will be held at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, April 2, 2023 at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, VA. Funeral services will follow with Jim Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. till time of services at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 3, 2023 at the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton, VA. Burial will follow. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 A.M. Monday at the funeral home to go to the cemetery in procession.
