WISE, VA. JULY 13, 2012

Goldie Sythia Matney Yates, 88, was called home to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 12, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Patterson, Virginia, the 7th child of Richard Harvey Matney and Rebecca Charlotte Rife Matney. She Married Robert Thomas Yates on September 19, 1944. Together they had 9 children that she spent each day of her life loving and serving. She retired after 25 years of services to the Wise County School Board working as a cook at L.F. Addington Middle School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rich and Lottie Matney (as they were called), and all of her 12 brothers and sisters; her husband, Robert Yates; and her eldest daughter and her husband, Janet Carol Yates Kerns and Lee Roy Kerns. Surviving are her children, Peggy and John Sullivan of Castlewood, VA, Jack and Regina Yates of Kingsport, TN, Bobby and Bettye Yates of Wise, VA, Jerry and Karen Yates of Big Stone Gap, VA; Amber and Jerry Rasnick of Clintwood, VA, Rufus Yates of Wise, VA, Brenda and Wendell Barnette of Wise, VA and Kathy and Huffy Sturgill of Wise, VA; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family would like to express special thanks to her adopted daughter and caregiver, Lena Huff and her caregivers, Ann Culbertson, Gladys Phillips, Connie Wright, Allyson Boggs and Betty Fannon. Funeral services for Goldie Sythia Matney Yates will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, VA with Pastor T.J. McAmis and Minister Huffy Sturgill officiating. The Family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. till time of services at 7:00 P.M. Saturday at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, VA. Graveside services and Burial will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 15, 2012 in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Big Stone Gap, VA. Family and friends will meet at 2:15 P.M.
